As at today, the application portal still accepts applications despite stating the closing date is 30th April

Applications for the prestigious Kay Mason Foundation (KMF) scholarship for the 2025 academic year are now open. If you are a Grade 6 learner in South Africa with strong academic potential and leadership qualities, this opportunity could be your stepping stone to a brighter future.

The KMF scholarship is designed to support young learners who demonstrate commitment, academic excellence and resilience, but come from households with limited financial resources. Each year, the foundation selects a group of talented scholars to benefit from a structured support programme aimed at unlocking their full potential.

Application Deadline

All applications must be submitted before 30 April 2025. Late submissions will not be considered. Applicants are advised to begin gathering the required documents as soon as possible to avoid disqualification due to incomplete submissions.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the KMF scholarship, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The applicant must be in Grade 6 during the year of applying.
  • The applicant must be a South African citizen.
  • The applicant must be between 10 and 13 years old in the year of application.
  • The applicant must show leadership potential, a strong work ethic, and a dedication to academic success.
  • The total monthly household income must not exceed R17 500.
  • The applicant must live in or around Cape Town, specifically within the Northern Suburbs, Southern Suburbs, Helderberg region, or within travelling distance of the KMF offices located in Bellville.

If the learner meets all the eligibility criteria, the following documents must be submitted along with the application:

  • Grade 5 Term 4 report
  • Grade 6 Term 1 report
  • Copy of the learner’s birth certificate
  • Certified copies of parent(s) or legal guardian(s) identity documents
  • Death certificate(s), if applicable
  • Proof of household income
  • Three months’ bank statements for both parent(s) or legal guardian(s)

Additional Learner Task

As part of the application process, learners are required to write a short essay in their own handwriting. This essay must describe their family, their living conditions and the community in which they live. This task is intended to help assess the learner’s communication skills and background.

Important Notes

Applicants must ensure that all required documents are submitted. Incomplete applications will be disqualified without exception. It is important to understand that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee a place in the KMF scholarship programme.

After the initial screening of applications, selected candidates will be invited to participate in an academic testing process. Those who perform well in this testing phase may be invited to join the KMF Selection and Support Programme. This programme involves Saturday classes and assessments in the Bellville area. However, participation in the Selection and Support Programme does not automatically lead to a scholarship award.
